About Slim’s Koffee Shak.

The Shak is located centrally in the historic and rustic mountain mill village of North Fork, California. It is the only coffee shop in the Exact Center of California. We sit right on the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway serving our local villagers and guests from out of town.

Owned and operated by locals, we are a community oriented business. We donate 10% of our profits to our in-house community development fund. We started and sponsor a mountain area Youth Chamber of Commerce.

Here at the Shak our motto is hospitality first, coffee second. We invite all guests alike to come settle in and hang out for a bit. Try our wonderful Shanti herbal tea and accompany it with our Shak Salad that has locally grown spinach, diced onions and tomatoes, blue cheese crumbles, pine nuts, dried cranberries, sprinkled with our special seasoning, drizzled with balsamic vinegar and roasted garlic oil and finally, topped with locally grown diced apple.

Or go rustic and drink our North Fork Coffee black and enjoy it with our savory Shak Bagel, that is an everything bagel toasted just on the insides, smeared with cream cheese, topped with onion and tomato slices, sprinkled with our special seasoning and drizzled with roasted garlic oil. We serve locally roasted organic coffee that is Rain Forest Friendly, Shade Grown and Direct Buy from the farmers. We offer specialty coffee drinks and exotic loose leaf teas. We serve deli sandwiches to order, salads, hummus, croissants, bagels and more.

We strive for all things local such as the produce, fruit, coffee, art and everything else that we can. The Shak also showcases work done by local artists and serves as a local art gallery to foster and inspire creativity. There is free WIFI, computer, satellite TV, music, games, library and locals to chat with. We invite you to our local hangout where you can make yourself at home and get a taste of what the mountain locals do.

Cheers,

The Shak Crew

  1. What a PARTY!

Zyg and I attened the HeArt Chakra artists’ reception at Slim’s Koffee Shak last night. The art display was from Timberline; but the ambiance and excitement was ALL North Fork. Scott Marsh, the Koffee Shak owner had hired a caterer to handle the food and one percussionist to handle the “electronic bongo drums.” Zyg and I remained inside and talked up the displayed art. It got so crowded we had to move outside to let the newcomers get in line.

By dark the food was out and the jungle drums were calling in the locals. I believe I counted at least 62 people wedging themselves in and out of this Lilliputin hot spot out in this former logging town. Before the evening was over the drum beats had lured in three local guitarists and one guy on the banjo. A tall guest was keeping beat with Scott’s windchines hanging out side the door.

Chairs and tables were set up outside to accomodate the overflow crowd. Scott stoked up a roaring fire in an artistically pierced 50 gallon drum created by a local metals artist. Our President, Janet Morita, came to represent Timberline for the festitivies, as did JoAnn Huffman… she is both a North Fork resident and Timberline artist.

Folks crowded in and out, milling around, browsing the art display, and loading their plates with the munchies.

But I would have to say that the highlight of the evening was when two young North Fork women dropped in unexpectedly and began a spectacular fire dance performance to the hypnotic drum beats. Professionally they are known as Mana Fire. Check out http://www.ManaFire.net Heather Lawson has set up the Lawson Studios for dance in North Fork and is teaching adults as well as elementary school age and teenagers this ancient performance art inspired by the Polynesian culture. These two lovely young dancers had the Koffe Shak crowd utterly messmerized. Local vehicle traffic through town just stopped in the middle of the road to watch these two jean clad cuties spinning hot pots of fire through the air while the crowd kept time hand clapping or slapping their legs. The tiny tots in attendance couldn’t sit still and they jiggled and bounced around their watchful parents. Personally I found it really refreshing to see so many people enjoying themselves fueled only on gourmet coffee and yummy snacks.

A number of North Fork photographers as well as Jim Crocket (the wood worker of boat builder fame) were working the crowd drumming up business for Sierra Art Trails locations in the center of town for the 10th Anniversary planned for this fall. In visiting with the locals I heard individuals repeat their admiration and respect for Scott Marsh whose trendy WIFI wired gourmet Koffee Shak has about single handedly revitalized “down town” North Fork. They told me that Scott sponsors these soirrees just about every Saturday night during the summer and that at times they have had upwards of 200 folks coming to enjoy the festivities. When I asked Scott about their perception he said, ” I don’t really ‘plan’ anything. I do hire the drummer and let the daytime crowd know I will be staying open. We might have 30… or several hundred may show up. It’s just good old fashioned home town fun.”

    You missed a great evening!

    Zyg and Merylyn
